James (Jimmy) Haverty Smith's life as a visual artist spans more than four decades as an architect, designer, sculpture and painting. Much of his work is informed by the ever-changing architecture of memory and nostalgia which continually reshape and re-color his vision of the world.
Jimmy grew up in Atlanta. He graduated from Marist high school, and received his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After college, he studied and painted at the Hambidge Center and participated in the 'Genesis Project' on Ossabaw Island. He then received his Master's Degree in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design earning the top design award.
As an architect Jimmy served as a Design Principal in the Atlanta office of Perkins &Will, with many of his projects receiving design award, and later served as Design Director in the Dubai, UAE and in the Amman, Jordan offices of Dar Al Handassah.
In 2019 Jimmy and his wife, Mary Anne Walser, moved back to Atlanta. He retired full-time in 2020 from Perkins & Will to more fully pursue his passion for painting, recently completing construction on an art studio he designed. Jimmy and Mary Anne also enjoy traveling, going for long walks in the woods with and their dog, and visiting their three children and six grandchildren.
