"Two Women," Azeb Zekiros (Ethiopian-American, 1950-2011), 2004. A striking, symmetrical double portrait of two women in flowing red robes with long braided hair, rendered in Zekiros' signature bold, geometric style. Set against a warm palette of reds, oranges, and ochres accented with tribal-inspired pattern work (diamonds, chevrons, and mosaic borders), the composition is unified by a shared ceramic vessel balanced above their heads. Signed and dated lower left. Framed, 24.6" x 27.9".
Azeb Zekiros (also known as Sheba Azeb Zekiros), an Ethiopian-American painter (1950-2011). She left Ethiopia as a teenager, moved to the U.S. in 1967, studied at the Art Students League in New York, and built a body of work centered on Ethiopian and African women - she's noted for pieces like "Nubian Woman" (2007), which fits perfectly alongside your 2005-dated piece. She named Skunder Boghossian and Julie Mehretu (both major Ethiopian-diaspora artists) as key influences, and that lineage shows clearly here - bold color-blocked backgrounds, elongated stylized faces, and rich use of pattern and adornment (beading, henna-style markings, jewelry) rooted in East African visual traditions.
