"Untitled (Two Women)," Azeb Zekiros, 2005. A vibrant, patterned portrait of two Ethiopian women rendered in a bold, geometric style - their faces in warm terracotta and burnt orange tones, adorned with traditional beaded jewelry and set against a richly decorated background of blues, diamonds, and mosaic-like motifs. A third figure, wrapped in a red patterned shawl, is partially visible in the foreground. Signed and dated lower right. Framed, 24.5" x 19".
Azeb Zekiros (also known as Sheba Azeb Zekiros), an Ethiopian-American painter (1950-2011). She left Ethiopia as a teenager, moved to the U.S. in 1967, studied at the Art Students League in New York, and built a body of work centered on Ethiopian and African women - she's noted for pieces like "Nubian Woman" (2007), which fits perfectly alongside your 2005-dated piece. She named Skunder Boghossian and Julie Mehretu (both major Ethiopian-diaspora artists) as key influences, and that lineage shows clearly here - bold color-blocked backgrounds, elongated stylized faces, and rich use of pattern and adornment (beading, henna-style markings, jewelry) rooted in East African visual traditions.
