Mysterious and captivating, this handcrafted teapot by David Regan transforms a functional vessel into a dreamlike work of art.

A striking sgraffito design-carefully carved through a rich black glaze to reveal the luminous porcelain beneath-creates a dramatic contrast that draws the viewer into an imagined world.

The surface tells a fantastical story: a solitary figure bathed in moonlight, watched over by two birds and framed by flowing forms that evoke waves, sand, or an otherworldly landscape. Rich in symbolism and open to interpretation, the composition invites viewers to create their own narrative with every glance. Artist Statement

To put it another way, I don't look to the external world to find subject matter. There are no "things" that I observe and then abstract from. My subject matter is the moment-to-moment engagement between myself, and the marks I make on the canvas-painting as an activity of being present.

Artist Biography

Montana-based ceramist David Regan (b. 1964) began working professionally in 1991 and has quickly become well recognized for his distinctive vessels. Regan's porcelain animal forms, covered in intricate sgraffito drawings, invite close observation. Although they appear to be decorative and sculptural, many of them are actually entirely functional and this is part of their complexity. Addressing themes of human and animal consumption and the natural cycles of life and death through his illustrations, Regan links these ideas to the function of traditional serving containers like soup tureens and casseroles.
