Artist Bio

[matoe] is a Nigerian-born creative based in Chicago, whose work is shaped by a deep connection to his African heritage, the everyday person, and his environment. Drawing from personal memory and cultural identity, his creative practice blends influence from traditional forms, everyday

experiences, and the unspoken rhythms of home. His work pays homage to cultural heritage and the enduring message instilled by his parents: "Never forget the home from which you came." This principle forms the foundation of his artistic identity and creative path.

His signature style is marked by fluid line work and symbolic and mask-like features that serve as a bridge between past and present. These choices are emotional anchors that connect his internal world with the broader conversation around belonging, perception, and transformation.

Through this visual language, he explores themes of identity, perception, and acceptance inviting dialogue and introspection.

For matoe, art is not only a form of expression, but a necessity-a reflection of self, a way of remembering and processing, and a commitment to staying rooted while growing.
