Artist Bio

Gunes Goker is a 18 year old filmmaker and photographer born and raised in Istanbul, Turkiye later moved to Chicago in 2015. His creative practice explores movement, memory, identity, and minute details of everyday life. Working across both moving and still images, he is interested in the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit, and the ways photography can preserve moments that might otherwise be lost to time.

Photography has been a central part of Goker's practice. Alongside commissioned and collaborative work documenting dance companies and performers, he maintains a deeply personal photo archive of his own life and travels. Images primarily taken on 35mm and medium-format film using vintage cameras.

Goker's work with dance is rooted in a fascination with movement and the human body in space. Photographing dancers and companies requires an awareness of gesture, rhythm, and timing. This carries into Goker's broader photographic practice, where spontaneity and careful observation exist next to one another.

Across their practice, Goker is drawn to images that feel honest, intimate, and lived-in. Whether it is photographing a dancer in motion or an ordinary moment from daily life, his work seeks to find meaning in the fleeting and the personal, using photography as a tool for both observation and remembrance.
