"Within every juniper under the desert sun is blue shadow, seemingly another world of cool, turquoise, diffused light, a refuge from the heat for animals and a reprieve for thought.
Many times, hiking through the desert with sweat dripping and every step growing heavier, I've found myself seeking the shade of a juniper, sitting against one of its great roots, half buried and jutting from the trunk, beneath turquoise berries and the branches of a half-living thing existing in both realms. Its roots disappear into stone while its branches reach toward the sky. There is a sense of longing that I share with these trees. They stand between heat and shade, earth and sky, life and death. Some are hundreds of years old. Even after they die, their wood can persist for thousands of years, connecting the present to a desert prehistory far older than my own.
Lizards dart across the bark. Birds nest in twisted limbs. Countless generations of people have found food, fuel, medicine, and shelter beneath these trees. To me, every juniper is the center of its own world, a galaxy within a galaxy." -Cody Chamberlain
