Thomas E Lockhart III. This image represents the trials and tribulations that we have been through in this country, and in the midst of every adversity that we have faced, we've been able to climb and triumph into the next level. In his hand, he is holding a broken chain on one side, which shows the American flag, and on the inside, it shows a cotton field, but the breaking of that is the understanding of the direction he has headed. There are three whips on his back, one showing a slave ship, the second showing the American flag, and the last showing the ascension to the presidency of that same United States that enslaved him. In that instance, he is being whipped to greatness. In his hand, he is holding freedom papers with a quote from Malcolm X, and he is in the understanding that, coming from his situation, he expects everyone to treat him equally, and he has the freedom of that in his mind. The crown represents his new knowledge and wisdom of who he is, and him acknowledging the greatness of who he is to become. The birds are his imagination taking flight as he is moving into the future.
