John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West, exhibition poster (1897-1946) - 37 x 23 inches framed; 1998.

Like Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry was a major American scene painter of the 1930s known for his realistic depictions of rural life and Midwestern landscapes, particularly in his native Kansas. He was commissioned to paint murals in the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior buildings in Washington, DC, as well as the Kansas State Capitol. In 1998, the posthumous exhibition John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West was organized at the University of Wisconsin and traveled to the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This exhibition poster features Curry's Our Good Earth, which he painted in 1942. It was previously owned by Curry's widow, artist Kathleen Gould (1899-2001) of New London, CT, who spent her life preserving the artist's work after his death.
