KATE NELSON BREWSTER, MA

THE ROLL OF THE FULL TIDE, 2020

Value: $1200

Kate Nelson is drawn to and moved by the outdoor life. She has studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (there influenced by Chuck Close, Keith Hollingworth, and John Grillo), at Massachusetts College of Art, at Haystack Mountain School on Deer Isle, Maine and worked in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. Her work is in the permanent collection of the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA; the Cahoon Museum in Cotuit, MA and in numerous corporate and private collections, including Sony and Pfizer USA. A Provincetown Arts magazine article includes an essay on Nelson's work written by conceptual artist/philosopher Adrian Piper. She writes: "There has always been, in all the work, the joyous ringing expanses of color, soft brushwork scrubbing or caressing the edges of shapes that melt into one another, and, at the center, opening and deepening, pulling you in and often hurling you around and through the canvas with the motion of gestures refined by Nelson's longstanding practice of yoga. There has always been a reverence for the wisdom of the brush and the oil crayon, bruising and saturating the surface in ways the tool and the surface determine together" Nelson paints in her barn-studio in Brewster on Cape Cod. Local galleries showing her work include: Left Bank Gallery, Wellfleet; Ross Coppelman, Goldsmith, E. Dennis, MA.
