CATHERINE HESS
THE WAY TO THE BAY, 2024
Value: $575
Catherine Hess has been showing and selling her art for over 25 years. A long-time annual visitor and later part time resident on Cape Cod, she became a year- round resident of Wellfleet in 2021. At first working exclusively in watercolors, she has painted largely with oils for the past decade. She also creates monotypes, known as "painterly prints" and white line or "Provincetown prints". While regularly painting figures and portraits, her primary focus is Cape landscapes, most often done "plein air" or onsite. She loves being immersed in the outdoors, and it shows in her paintings of dunes, marshes, shorelines and iconic buildings. She aims to capture the feeling of a scene- its light, its movement, and its textures, which she often uses palette knives to achieve. She is particularly drawn to painting the day-to-day, season-to-season, and year-to-year changes in Cape landscapes. Catherine has shown her work extensively on the Cape, at art museums and centers, as well as galleries. She has been included in special exhibits at Addison Art Gallery and Garvey Rita Art and Antiques, both in Orleans, and has exhibited at The Works Gallery in Wellfleet since 2021.
