The Field Journal

A Day in the Wild with Dr. Tyler Achatz
Parasitology Research Assistant Experience

The biologist glanced toward the tree line.

Not in search of game.

In search of answers.

Because every field expedition begins the same way.

With a question.

What lives here? How does it survive? What secrets remain hidden beneath feathers, scales, fur, and skin?

For most people, science is something encountered in textbooks.

For one fortunate participant, it becomes an adventure.

This unique experience places you alongside Dr. Tyler Achatz in the field and laboratory, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the work of a practicing parasitologist. Equal parts scientific expedition and hands-on research opportunity, this experience provides an authentic glimpse into how discoveries are made.

Depending on your interests and ongoing research activities, you may assist with a variety of field and laboratory tasks. Activities can include helping collect specimens in the field, observing research methods, participating in laboratory procedures, and learning firsthand how scientists study wildlife and the parasites that affect them.

Field activities are conducted under authorized scientific collecting permits and may involve a variety of species, including birds, alligators, and mammals, depending upon permit allowances, season, and active research projects.

No lecture hall.

No PowerPoint slides.

Just real science conducted in real places by people driven by curiosity.

Because discovery doesn't always happen behind a desk.

Sometimes it begins in a marsh, a forest, or along a riverbank.

This Scientific Adventure Includes:

  • The opportunity to serve as a Research Assistant for a Day in Dr. Tyler Achatz's Parasitology Lab
  • Hands-on participation in research activities based upon interest and project availability
  • Opportunities to assist with both field collection and laboratory research
  • Exposure to professional wildlife and parasitology research techniques
  • Possible field experiences involving birds, alligators, mammals, and other wildlife as permitted by scientific collecting authorizations
  • A unique behind-the-scenes look at the work of a practicing scientist
  • Experience must be scheduled with Dr. Tyler Achatz and is subject to research schedules, permit requirements, weather conditions, and participant suitability.
  • Certificate expires September 30, 2027.

Estimated Value: Measured in discovery, adventure, and the rare opportunity to exchange observation for participation in the pursuit of science.
