Margaret Davidson, Teapot, cup and saucer, colored pencil on rag paper, 21 x 21 x 2 in
Margaret Davidson's work explores the relationship between the drawing mark and the surface on which it exists. Whether working in realism or abstraction, she is interested in the tension between the physical reality of the drawn mark and the illusion created through representation. For Davidson, this interplay is central to the experience of drawing itself.
She often works within the still life tradition, a genre she finds especially subtle and compelling. Beyond the objects depicted, she is interested in what still life can reveal about the person who selected, arranged, and lived with those objects. Through careful observation and composition, her drawings examine presence, memory, and human experience through seemingly ordinary forms.
Davidson works almost exclusively in drawing, on paper and other surfaces, embracing realism as a means of exploring abstraction, structure, and perception. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Washington. She has taught at Gage Academy of Art and has also worked as a scientific illustrator.
