Marianne Partlow, Starting, 2012, Soft Pastel on coated paper on foam core, 16 x 16 in
When Marianne Partlow turned to pastel, she realized that the medium required a more simplified approach to process and design in order to preserve its immediacy and raw energy. Seeking this balance, she began revisiting earlier paintings, isolating areas of intensity and focus that could function as distilled expressions of larger ideas.
Often inspired by nature and architecture, her pastel works act as visual fragments or signals, suggestive forms that point toward broader sensory and emotional experiences. Through abbreviation and reduction, Partlow creates compositions that emphasize presence, atmosphere, and movement rather than detailed representation.
Color plays a central role in her work, functioning both emotionally and symbolically. Through layered yet direct applications of pastel, she explores how color can communicate energy, memory, and meaning with immediacy and clarity.
