Heidi Epstein, Winter Rose in the Wind, 2025, Dry pastel on paper, 21 x 17.5 x 1.0 in
This pastel by Heidi Epstein is part of a series of six works previously exhibited together as a visual poem titled Winter Rose. The series includes pieces such as Winter Rose In the Wind, Winter Rose A Perfect Design, and Winter Rose Its Scent Falling From the Sky.
Created during January and February of 2025, these dry pastel works were inspired by a single rose in Epstein's garden as it endured the effects of winter weather. Over time, she became captivated by the rose's simultaneous fragility and resilience, finding within it both beauty and sorrow.
Through subtle shifts of color, texture, and atmosphere, the series reflects on impermanence, endurance, and transformation. The rose becomes both a specific subject and a poetic symbol-an image shaped by the passage of time, the harshness of season, and the quiet persistence of life.
