Chaim Bezalel, Winter Sun, 2011, encaustics on linen mounted on wood, 24 x 14 x 2 in
Chaim Bezalel began as a photographer in the 1970s and retains a documentary sensibility, often working in series. Over time, he found traditional photography too constrained and influenced by the precision of darkroom practice and the visual saturation of contemporary advertising. In response, he began exploring image degradation and material transformation, using photography primarily as a starting point for painting rather than an end in itself.
His work often originates from his own photographs but is translated into paintings on rough handmade paper, burlap, or raw linen, emphasizing texture, imperfection, and material presence. Early experiments included toy and inexpensive cameras, reflecting an ongoing interest in chance and limitation.
Bezalel studied documentary film and photography in college and maintains a mental archive of images informed by both his upbringing in New York and years spent living in Israel. His practice is further shaped by a deep engagement with art history and a belief that taste and perception can be developed over time.
