Paul Havas, Grayland Fog, 2008, Oil, 24 x 18 x 2 in, A shed in blue and red shadows sits on a cranberry field as grey clouds float by.

Paul Havas (1940-2012) was an acclaimed American landscape painter best known for his deeply evocative, synthesized depictions of the Pacific Northwest environment. Born in Orange, New Jersey, he moved to the West Coast for his graduate studies and ultimately became a central figure in the Northwest art community. Over a career spanning more than four decades, his work captured everything from geometric farmlands to moody urban cityscapes. Havas was known for a modernist, abstract feel that reduced and synthesized natural views rather than strictly documenting them. Primarily focused on Skagit Valley farmlands, Havas also captured the Washington coast, and night cityscapes of Seattle. The Museum of Northwest Art honored his legacy with the exhibition Paul Havas: A Life of Painting.
