Meg Holgate, Nightflower, 2025, Oil on Canvas, 36 x 32 x 1.5 in

Meg Holgate creates paintings inspired by the transient, shifting qualities of the Pacific Northwest environment. Her work explores the fleeting and conditional nature of landscape, shaped by filmy light, atmospheric color, and an opalescent sense of place. Forms in her paintings often seem to emerge from or dissolve back into the landscape, reflecting a world in constant transformation.

Working with large, soft-haired brushes, Holgate applies veils of color that blend and accumulate to shape space, perception, and emotional resonance. Her compositions layer clouds, islands, water, and botanical forms into shifting structures that balance chaos and stillness. Rather than fixed representation, she aims for states of awe and ambiguity, where landscape becomes a field of perception rather than a static image.

Holgate views nature as an interconnected, time-sensitive system and a source of continual inspiration. Through painting, she engages with cycles of change, honoring the ebb and flow of life while exploring new possibilities for seeing and experiencing the natural world.
