Jo Cosme, House but not a Home, 2020, Photography, 24 x 16 x 1 in

Jo Cosme is a Puerto Rican artist working in photography and installation whose practice explores how Puerto Rico is represented both on the island and from the outside. Raised in Puerto Rico, Cosme draws from personal memory and collective history to examine the gap between lived experience and the simplified "paradise" imagery often promoted through tourism and media.

The work focuses on portraying Puerto Rico as a complex, evolving place shaped by resilience, contradiction, culture, and community rather than as a romanticized destination. Cosme is particularly interested in public and transitional spaces, such as airports, where perceptions of place and identity are formed quickly and collectively.

Through photography and installation, the work seeks to create representations that feel recognizable and grounded for those connected to Puerto Rico while also encouraging broader audiences to engage more thoughtfully with the island's realities. The goal is to present Puerto Rico not as an abstract idea, but as a lived experience shaped by generations of history and cultural continuity.
