Suze Woolf, Whitehorse from Sauk Mountain, 2025, Watercolor on paper, 15 x 11 in
Suze Woolf spent her childhood drawing. She studied ceramics and printmaking at the University of Washington while working as a technical editor. Early in the development of computer graphics, she moved into graphic and interface design and managed a skunkworks team creating demos of computational futures. These intersecting experiences continue to inform her multidisciplinary practice.
Today, Woolf works across painting, paper casting, artist books, pyrography, and installation. She considers herself fortunate that a wide range of lifelong skills converge in her artistic career. Her professional practice also includes curating large traveling exhibitions, juried competitions, and contributing work to nonprofit fundraising efforts. She maintains a large plein air mailing list that circulates weekly for six months each year. Her work has been supported through grants, exhibitions, and residencies from arts organizations, national parks, and artist colonies.
Woolf's artistic practice began with landscape painting, often as a way of creating emotional records of place. She continues to bring drawing materials on every outdoor hike, maintaining a direct and ongoing engagement with observation in nature.
Painting outdoors from life is both demanding and deeply immersive. For Woolf, it is a "flow" state that integrates sensation, skill, and sustained attention, offering a direct experience of perception and environment in real time.
