Barbara Nash, Pivot 5: Ogallala Tears - the color of groundwater, 2026, Watercolor and colored pencil, 27 x 27 x 1 in

With a background in geology, Barbara Nash examines the ways humans act as geologic agents, shaping and transforming the physical landscape. Her Pivot series explores the aesthetic, cultural, and environmental consequences of the unsustained over-extraction of groundwater for agriculture.

Drawing from patterns found in irrigated landscapes and altered terrain, Nash's work reflects on the tension between human innovation and environmental vulnerability. The paintings consider how systems designed to sustain growth can simultaneously deplete and destabilize the natural resources on which they depend. Through abstraction and layered form, Pivot invites viewers to contemplate the long-term impact of human intervention on the land and the fragile balance between cultivation, consumption, and sustainability.
