Jennifer Harrington, Purple Reflection, 2002, Mixed Water Media/Collage, 16 x 20 x 1 in
Jennifer Harrington views art as a balance between two essential forces, much like the wings of a bird working together in flight. One wing is technical execution-composition, color, articulation, and structure-while the other is the ability to engage emotion, memory, and intellect. Her process begins through observation and intuition, allowing experiences to move through the body and emerge physically through the act of painting. Layers of paint, collage, and varnish create surfaces rich with texture, depth, and atmosphere.
Working primarily through abstraction, Harrington explores the internal world and the challenge of expressing experiences that are often difficult to define in words. Symbolic imagery arises organically through dreams, meditation, journal writing, and lived experience. Recurring motifs include birds, wolves, dogs, deer, black-and-white trees, screens, and shrine-like forms. Recent works have been influenced by her experiences living within a Buddhist retreat center, where contemplation, ritual, and quiet observation continue to shape her visual language.
