Holly Hudson, Tree Sconce, 2025, Glazed porcelain, 10 x 10 x 6.5 in
Inspired by Greek and Roman mythology, Christian religious art, and creation myths from cultures around the world, Holly Hudson's work seeks connections across systems of belief in order to explore shared human experience. Her practice reflects a desire to uncover common spiritual and cultural threads at a time when social and political divisions are increasingly emphasized.
Raised in Southeast Alaska, Hudson experienced a convergence of influences early in life, attending Catholic school during the week and Methodist church on Sundays while also being surrounded by the art and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the region. The tension and coexistence between monotheistic and animistic worldviews continue to inform her work and remain central to her artistic inquiry.
Hudson is particularly interested in comparative mythology, especially recurring patterns within creation stories across cultures. These narratives serve as a foundation for imagined worlds in which the divine feminine is restored and humans, plants, and animals coexist in interconnected and transformative ways. Through hybrid forms and symbolic imagery, her work envisions relationships that dissolve boundaries between species, spirituality, and myth.
