Fred Videon, Tropics, 2025, Acrylic on Canvas, 19 x 20 x 1 in
Fred Videon is an artist living and working in Port Townsend, Washington. Raised in Montana, he discovered his first artistic interest in black-and-white photography as a teenager. He later earned a degree in Engineering from Stanford University. After graduating, he began studying painting and drawing, eventually completing a BFA with an emphasis in painting at the University of Washington. Following a 30-year career in technology, he moved to Port Townsend in 2020 and returned to making art full time.
Each of Videon's paintings is a process of discovery. Through repeated cycles of revision and repainting, he searches for shapes and lines with character. He is drawn to ambiguity, suggestive spatial relationships, and subtle shifts in light and form.
His work embraces visual uncertainty, allowing ambiguities, spatial tensions, and unexpected relationships to emerge through the painting process. He is interested in the ways compositions can suggest depth, movement, and atmosphere without fixed resolution.
Videon's practice is guided by an attention to visual relationships and moments of surprise. He ultimately seeks to create work that is both beautiful and evocative, inviting viewers into a space of open interpretation and sustained looking.
