Air Twist Goblet by Ben Glaser
Glass art sits at a fascinating intersection of history, technique, and science. Throughout its development, innovations in materials have driven new colors and methods. And sometimes the most striking techniques do not require a new chemistry or formulation, but rather a better understanding of the glass you already have. One such technique is the air twist, which leveraged the viscous behavior of glass to trap air bubbles. This technique emerged in 18th century Britain to compete with new glass chemistries elsewhere in Europe. Here an air twist was made by elongating and twisting four trapped air bubbles. The twist was stretched while the bubble was inflating, creating a one-piece gobley cup and stem.
