Ablation by Alex de Almeida
Materials: Hand-carved soda-lime glass, patience.
Description:
This piece explores loss, permanence, and beauty. Just as glaciers ablate irrevocably through natural and unnatural processes, glass is lost irrevocably in the carving process via human hands. The mass of the object carries the record of every previous action and inaction; no matter how small, which can be felt in the dichotomy of textures. This serves as a memorialization of the imperfect natural world and our own impacts on it. The bottom lens acts as a literal window into the future. The bowl remains empty; full of potential.
This piece was created as part of the "Explore Coldworking" 2026 Summer Intensive Class taught by Frantisek Janak and Chad Holliday. Alex contemplated and practiced the piece for three days, and spent two creating it. The end result is a bowl that emulates the steady, quiet strength of a glacier while capturing the serenity and radial symmetry of a rose window.
