Notch 15 #12 by Giles Bettison

At first glance, Notch 15 #12 might suggest woven cloth or basketry, but it is, remarkably, glass.

Australian artist Giles Bettison is one of the contemporary masters of murrini, the ancient Venetian process of creating patterned cross-sections in glass. While still a student at Canberra School of Art, Bettison began adapting the technique using strips of colored sheet glass rather than traditional cane, helping create the textile-like visual language that has become his signature. In this vessel, hundreds of precisely organized elements form a dense black-and-gray lattice animated by flashes of red. Subtle notches carved around the silhouette interrupt the regular pattern and give the form a tactile rhythm.

Bettison's work belongs to major museum collections around the world, and his influence on contemporary patterned glass is difficult to overstate. This is a museum- caliber example of a technique he helped reinvent.
