JON AUSTIN was born and raised in North Platte, NE. He moved to Omaha in 2012 after graduating from the University of Nebraska at Kearney to teach pottery at Millard North High School. He works predominantly in ceramics, exploring and expanding the possibilities of traditional pinch pottery techniques. Ancient sculptural forms from Japan and Europe, along with biomorphic shapes found in nature, serve as major influences on his work. Through the combination, alteration, and repetition of numerous hand-built forms, Austin creates sculptures that feel both familiar and otherworldly. His process emphasizes touch, patience, and discovery, allowing each piece to evolve as forms are joined together. By transforming simple pinch pots into complex structures, he investigates themes of growth, interconnectedness, and transformation. Austin hopes viewers will engage with the tactile qualities of his work and discover new relationships between natural forms, history, and contemporary ceramic sculpture.
