MEL TINGLEY is an artist based in Omaha, NE. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1975 with an emphasis on sculpture and drawing. He later went on to complete a BS in mathematics at the University of Nebraska Omaha in 1987. His approach to the arts has been influenced by both of these degrees. When asked, he will say that his fine arts education contributed to his success in mathematics because it taught him to see what is there and not what his mind imagines is there. He has never pursued a career as an artist but successfully worked as an actuarial analyst for many years with several local insurance companies. He continued to produce artwork in both the Hot Shops (2009) and home studio settings (2009 to the present) and began entering works for the Bemis Center Annual Benefit Art Auction beginning in 2010. He currently produces two-dimensional pieces using a soft wax-based colored pencil. The current drawings are vibrant and color-dense with an intentionally formal approach.
