  • A Little Commonwealth: Family Life in Plymouth Colony by John Demos, 1970 - In this pioneering study Mr. Demos examines the family in a specific American context, that of the colony founded by the Pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower, during the first two generations of its existence. The book's most startling insights come from a reconsideration of commonly held views about American Puritans and of the ways in which they dealt with one another.
  • Bradford's History of the Plymouth Settlement, 1909 - Originally written between 1630 and 1655, Bradford's original manuscript was lost for decades during the American Revolution. It was famously rediscovered in the library of the Bishop of London at Fulham Palace in the 1890s, eventually being returned to Massachusetts in 1897. The 1909 edition capitalized on the renewed historical interest and publicity from this repatriation. It reads as an expansive, chronological history and covers the early years & travel, the establishment of the colony, signing of the Mayflower compact, and the devastating hardships of their first winter.
