• Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists by Stuart M. Frank, 1991 (signed by author) - Except for a small nucleus of collectors and museums, scrimshaw was relatively neglected as a collecting pursuit until the mid-1960s. Surprisingly few published works this increasingly popular field. The author has cataloged every known and recorded scrimshaw artist through the early 20th century, together with all known biographical facts about them and all attributed works.
• Figureheads and Ship Carvings at Mystic Seaport by Eduoard A. Stackpole, 1964 - The use of figureheads on ships goes back to the earliest days of man's venturing on the open sea. As the centuries passed, man's conquest of the sea was reflected by the progressive variety of figureheads. Mystic Seaport houses an extensive collection of these artifacts, and this work places the carvings within the context of 19th-century woodcarving and craftsmanship.
• Silent Pilots: Figureheads in Mystic Seaport Museum by Georgia W. Hamilton, 1984 - In this book, Georgia Hamilton has researched, described, and illustrated forty figureheads in the collection of Mystic Seaport; these range from the well known and positively identified to those with traditional but unverified attributions and those with unknown provenances. A list of all the figureheads in the collection is appended.
