The spider's identity is dynamic among folklore. Spider is lucky, clever, resourceful, cunning, generous, artful, and a familiar protector and teacher among us. From the three-paned window emerges the tradition of the triptych, inhabited, bound, mended, and called home by spider. She sews messages of creation, life, home, and presence, bringing forth loving and haunting symbols of maternity, purpose, and inhabitance.
Zola Simone is an interdisciplinary artist from Atlanta, GA. Working across sculpture, drawing, writing, and installation. Their practice is informed by relationships between craft, ecology, and adornment as modes of survival and intergenerational sites of imagining possible worlds.
Her practice is shaped by personal histories of matrilineal and patrilineal wisdom sharing, considering the confluence of time, memory, and possibility found among craft and the land which sustains it. Making is a means of gathering, remembering, and imagining futures rooted in lessons carefully carried forward among the work and rituals of daily life.
