Our doors flung open and a Good Samaritan came in with this wet dog in their arms. His bottom jaw was twisted in a disturbing and unnatural way. We rushed him into our trauma center where Dr. Ortiz dropped what she was doing and ran to his side. She immediately administered pain medications and lightly sedated him so she could reduce his stress while she took a look into his mouth. Horrifically, she estimated this injury occurred ONE to TWO WEEKS ago. Yes, you read that right. This small little angel had been running the streets by himself in unfathomable pain. We can't bear to think about how scared he must have been. He also hasn't been able to eat since his injury, and we can see his ribs under his curly fur.

We named him Buckminster, after the Ice Age cartoon character. We snuggled him in blankets and told him he was going to be ok, but first he would need to be very brave. We needed to put in a feeding tube while we consulted with orthopedic surgeons and specialists to determine how best to save his life.

After undergoing a major surgery to remove the dead part of his lower jaw, Buckminster returned to us as if nothing had ever happened! He has the liveliest, most grateful spirit, and he is loving his new lease on life!
