Title: Sitka
Artist: Rosemary Sturm
Medium: Acrylic
Dimensions: 20" x 24"
Animal Depicted: Sitka

Sitka was transferred to Stray Rescue as a medical emergency that other facilities would not have had the resources to treat him. There were so many stories that we heard about what had happened to him, but we do believe that he was attacked by other dogs. He arrived with a broken jaw and lameness in one of his front legs. But he was just a baby - three months old weighing 25 pounds. The clinic worked quickly to stabilize him and began making phone calls right away to see what the specialists thought could be done. We weren't sure at the moment what was going to be the most humane path for Sitka, but we stayed positive that there was hope for him. The very next day, Dr. Ortiz transferred Sitka to Mizzou herself, so they could begin working on his jaw right away. After two major surgeries, Sitka spent a few days at Mizzou to recover, and then he came back to us at Stray Rescue. He got stronger every day, and one of his doctors from the surgery center even decided to be his medical foster! He was in such great hands with Dr. Naes, and he quickly adjusted to his new way of life. He was able to eat all on his own and most importantly - he was able to be a puppy again. Sitka found his forever home just a few weeks later, and he has put all of the terrible memories behind him.
