Photos I Didn't Take (About One Year), 2018

Limited edition bound book, digital prints of cyanotypes

7 x 5 x 0.25 in. (90 pages)

Photos I Didn't Take, was the result of an experimental documentation process--daily observations of changes in my community. The book's conclusion provides this contextual explanation: "Because of my reckless photography habit, I was on a year-long snapshot diet---recording choice moments with words instead of pictures. For this book, I translated these narrative images via the alchemy of cyanotype, one of the earliest photographic processes."

Oakland-based public-service artist Sue Mark, working as marksearch, designs interactive spaces for story-sharing to re-knit community bonds. For three decades she has amplified voices excluded from archives through walking discussions, workshops, celebrations and published community scholarship, ensuring local culture is preserved and anchored in public memory. Partnering with knowledge bearers, public historians, and neighbors, she invites communities to revive intergenerational wisdom and nurture bonds between people and place. Through sculptural frameworks for collaboration in public spaces, she creates projects beyond museums and galleries.
