There is no more consequential animal in the history of Red Wagyu genetics outside Japan than Heartbrand Big Al 502. The first fullblood Akaushi born on American soil, son of the breed's greatest Japanese proven sire crossed on the breed's greatest foundation dam, Big Al became a mainstay herd sire at Heartbrand for the entirety of his seventeen-year life - a life ended only when he escaped his paddock in pursuit of cows, the way any true legend ought to go. He is commemorated today by a life-size mount at Heartbrand's Texas operation. His semen, when available, is among the most sought-after in the breed worldwide. What is offered here is a genuinely rare opportunity.
Sire: Dai 10 Mitsumaru - The Greatest Bull in Japan
Dai 10 Mitsumaru never left Japan, and the Japanese government ensured he never would. He was considered the greatest bull in the world by Japan at the time when Al and Marie Wood sent world-class cattlemen Yukio Kurosawatsu and Bruce Hemmingsen to procure a shipment of Japanese Browns to America in 1993. His proof in Kumamoto consisted of 73 head with 41.1% grading above BMS 5, ranking him first among all Red Wagyu sires in 1998. He is the sire of foundation imports Hikari, Kaedemaru, and Kunisakae - four of the breed's most influential animals - and his genetic fingerprint defines the entire mainstream Red Wagyu population outside Japan. Big Al is his most celebrated son in any country.
Dam: Akiko - Queen of the Akaushi Breed
Akiko was one of the top cows in Japan and it took considerable wrangling to buy out her existing contract and bring her to the states. Since there was no way to get Dai 10 out of the country, the decision was made to breed Akiko to him before she started quarantine in Japan. The result of that calf, carried across the Pacific via plane en utero, was none other than Big Al. Akiko is widely referred to as the queen of the Akaushi breed. She is renowned for her ability to produce progeny that perform in all facets - growth, milk, conformation, and exceptional marbling. Her Breedplan EBVs place her in the elite growth category, and her 35 registered progeny in Australia are highlighted by Big Al himself. Beyond Big Al, Akiko produced TWA Kotsukari (by Hikari), Heartbrand Red Star (by Shigemaru), and Heartbrand's Come and Take It - a roster of sons that has shaped the breed on three continents. The all-round excellence of the Akiko maternal line - including carcass traits, growth, milk, fertility, and conformation - is its defining hallmark, and her females flush well and have produced a promising next generation of sires in many programs around the globe.
