Standing in a remote Alaskan river, I watched this old grizzly emerge from the water after feeding. The current pushed around him, the mountains stood silent behind him, and yet nothing seemed capable of altering his course.

As he stepped toward the bank, he shook the river from his coat, sending thousands of droplets into the air. For a fraction of a second, the chaos of motion surrounded him, yet the bear himself remained completely unmoved. Focused. Intentional. Certain of where he was going.

What struck me most wasn't his size, though he was one of the largest bears I have ever photographed. It was his presence. He carried himself with a quiet confidence that only comes from surviving countless winters, hardships, and challenges in one of the harshest environments on earth.

To me, Headstrong is a photograph about conviction. The ability to keep moving forward despite the noise, distractions, and obstacles surrounding you. The river, the spray, and the chaos are temporary. Purpose is not.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is simply keep moving forward.
