Showcasing the distinctive style of late artist Saul Kaplan, this decorative plate features more than calming colors and a cheerful flower. Kaplan studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in his twenties, where he deepened his dedication to art and developed a lifelong fascination with heads. Over the following decades, his minimalist portraits and ceramics explored themes of intimacy and connection through overlapping, interwoven lines.
The circular composition draws the eye inward, creating a sense of continuity until it settles on the contrasting flower cradled by two hands at the center. While the colors and forms appear simple, together they create a thoughtful, contemplative work.
This piece was purchased during an exhibition and sale of Kaplan's work at the Russell Museum in Waynesboro, Virginia, in the summer of 2025.
Dimensions: 11.5" diameter x 1.5"
