This Savonarola chair, also known as a Dante or curule chair, is a Renaissance Revival piece that draws on classical antiquity. The design utilizes an X-frame or scissor structure, a silhouette that historically served as a portable throne for Egyptian rulers and Roman commanders to symbolize authority and high social status. This particular chair features a slatted seat and back, transitioning into armrests that terminate in hand-carved lion masks, representing strength and leadership.
The crest rail is decorated with an intricate medallion and scrollwork carvings, typical of the elaborate craftsmanship found during the Italian Renaissance. While the name Savonarola was popularized by 19th-century dealers to associate the style with the Italian friar Girolamo Savonarola, the form itself is a masterclass in architectural furniture. The chair terminates in paw feet, further emphasizing the neoclassical influence and providing a grounded, sculptural presence to this historical seat.
A true antique and a signature piece in any space, this chair typically starts at $850 in most auctions.
