Designers Poulsen, South, Syfert. This pair is an excellent example of the Rococo Revival style, which dominated American parlors between 1845 and 1870. Known as a fauteuil - a French-style armchair with open sides - the chairs capture the Victorian obsession with French luxury. The design is defined by high-relief carvings and a fluid, "S-curve" geometry. Each chair features cabriole legs with intricately carved acanthus leaves at the knees and scrollwork arms that showcase the eras advancements in woodworking and machine-assisted carving.
Produced in major American cabinetmaking hubs like New York or Philadelphia, these chairs represent the Gilded Age aspirations. This era saw the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and the post-Civil War Reconstruction, a time when homeowners sought furniture that displayed status and historical continuity.
Bidding for chairs of this style typically start at $700.
