This painting features a view from the Kennedy Ridge Trail within the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy's Riverview Preserve - the very terrain that served as the backdrop for the beloved 2026 OVS class hikes, a tradition since the school's founding. Robert believes art needs no explanation: "Any good work of art can and should stand on its own."
For 25 years, Robert Wassell has painted the backcountry of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties exclusively - backpacking into the local mountains with sketchpad in hand. As he puts it, "Van Gogh had Arles, I have Ventura." Working in what he calls Representational Expressionism, Robert captures the Channel Islands, canyons, and streams in early morning or late afternoon light, where bold shadows bring the landscape to life. His work hangs in over a dozen locations at Patagonia's headquarters.
