CSoM's existing 720-cubic-foot Anagama kiln was constructed in 2007 generously hosted on local land owned by the Tande family, establishing a world-class wood firing experience in Missoula. A cornerstone of the CSoM Residency Program, the kiln is fired four to six times each year during both community and private firings. It provides a facility for long-term wood fire artists in residence to develop bodies of work and cultivate meaningful connections to the ceramics community both in Missoula and beyond, a key tenet of the Studio's mission.

While the kiln has benefited from upgrades and maintenance over its 19-year lifespan, it has reached a point where a substantial rebuild is necessary to preserve its excellence and ensure its longevity. This rebuild is essential to sustaining the program's future. The Woodfire Committee, in collaboration with local architects, engineers, ceramic materials partners, and skilled tradespeople, has been developing a comprehensive plan to replace the existing kiln, enhance the safety and functionality of the site, and honor the history and distinct character of the anagama and Missoula's vibrant wood-firing culture.
