Potsketch by Nick Kakavas
Earthenware, red iron decal 5.5x5x0.25"

Nick Kakavas produces work that is narrative in nature, drawing from autobiographical experience to investigate questions of identity. His ceramic practice functions as a material extension of the self, transforming personal history and internal states into physical form. Through the integration of personal iconography and memory drawn imagery, he examines the relationship between the "ideal" and the "real" self, establishing a conceptual framework through which his internal thought processes are organized and validated.
His practice with clay is rooted in repetition and duration, where the act of building becomes both meditative and psychologically generative. Through repetitive making, Kakavas enters a temporal space in which his thoughts drift toward memories and mental states often suppressed or left unspoken in daily life. The physical process of shaping clay allows ideas to materialize gradually, transforming intangible thought into form. In this way, the emergence of the object becomes an act of affirmation-solidifying his existence into a tangible marker of lived experience.

Nick received his BFA from University of Montana and an MFA from Georgia State University, and currently lives in Missoula.
