Title: Nahual 2: Ajmaq

Materials: T-shirt yarn, monk's cloth, cotton twill

Dimensions: 16" x 20"

Description of the Piece: Hooked rug of Spiritual Symbol from Maya Calendar: Images feature Nahual Symbol, Condor Birds and Trees. The rug is constructed from yarn made from recycled t-shirts. The piece is a result of a recent trip I made to Guatemala to study with the rug makers of Multicolores. The Nahual symbol is based on my birth date and was given to me by my teachers in Guatemala.

Artist Bio: Kirsten Ervin is an artist exploring the intersection of illustration, fiber and community. She regularly teaches rug hooking and punch rug embroidery at Contemporary Craft and curates The Silver Apple Gallery, one of Pittsburgh's smallest art venues
