Guests will join Rachel Delphia for a special tour highlighting craft-based practices within If the word we, the 59th Carnegie International, May 2, 2026-Jan. 3, 2027
This custom program will focus on the creative polymath Saloua Raouda Choucair (born 1916,
Beirut, Lebanon; died 2017, Beirut, Lebanon). Best known as a sculptor, Choucair's practice
spanned disciplines, with one form inspiring another and art flowing into everyday life. Across media, her iterative work explored abstract geometries and modularity. Choucair built relationships with craftspeople in Beirut and spent a semester at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan studying jewelry, enameling, ceramics, and weaving. Carnegie Museum of Art presents a survey of Choucair's oeuvre in wood, stone, metal, ceramics, and fiber, beautifully and intimately installed in the Scaife Collection Galleries. Time permitting, the tour will also visit installations by Silät (founded 2023; based in northern Salta, Argentina) a collective of women weavers from the Wichí people led by Claudia Alarcón, and Sofu Teshigahara (born 1900, Osaka, Japan; d. 1979, Tokyo, Japan) founded The Sogetsu School of ikebana (est. 1927).
If the word we, the 59th Carnegie International, is organized by Ryan Inouye, Danielle A.
Jackson, and Liz Park, the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curators of the 59th Carnegie International.
