Thea 7 on an acrylic canvas (48x36")

The original artwork has been donated by the artist himself, who says, "My work begins with the idea that seeing is an act of construction. The brain does not simply record the world, it interprets what it sees through memory, expectation, emotion and experience. By leaving the human face
unresolved, I ask the viewer to participate in completing it. What emerges belongs
partly to the painting and partly to the beholder. That ambiguity raises a larger question at the center of my work - when we look at another person, how much are we seeing them and how much are we seeing ourselves?
Perception continually changes. We look again, attention shifts, memory intervenes, the brain updates its interpretation. A viewer can see despair in a portrait today and hope
tomorrow. So the painting isn't just completed differently by different people, it can be completed differently by the same person at different moments. We don't simply see what is there. We construct what we see and that construction changes with who we are, what we have experienced and when we are looking."
