Clementine Hunter (1886/1887-1988) was a self-taught Louisiana folk artist from the Cane River region who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. Born into a Creole family in Natchitoches Parish, she began painting in her fifties, creating vibrant scenes that captured everyday Black Southern life in the early 20th century.
Though she first sold her paintings for as little as 25 cents, her work later gained national recognition and has been exhibited in major museums. Over her lifetime, Hunter created thousands of paintings and remains one of Louisiana's most celebrated folk artists.
This print depicts her home at Melrose Plantation, including the historic building many locals refer to as the "African House."
