This framed piece is a Tibetan Thangka, but what makes yours particularly special is that it is silk embroidery (Keshi or Kesi style) rather than the more common hand-painted version.
Shakyamuni's First Sermon:
The central figure is Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha). You can identify this specific scene by several key symbols: The Mudra (Hand Gesture): His right hand is reaching down to touch the earth (Bhumisparsha mudra), representing the moment of his enlightenment. The Two Disciples: Flanking him are his two primary disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, often depicted standing and holding a monk's staff (khakkhara) and an alms bowl. The Deer and the Wheel: At the very bottom center, you see two deer facing a Dharma Wheel. This is the universal symbol for the Buddha's first sermon at Deer Park in Sarnath, where he first "turned the wheel of the Dharma."
