Artist Statement

Kathleen Studebaker is a sculptor currently focusing on non-precious metals, who occasionally creates sculpturally-inspired jewelry. She is a fabricator with a great love of detailed craftsmanship and problem-solving, who makes every element of each of her works by hand (no CNC or lasers; no found-objects). She is also a fidgeter who can't keep her hands still, and began making fidget-jewelry for personal use, before eventually expanding her jewelry-making practice. Her work is inspired by a fascination with mechanical function and an (amateur) interest in physics & outer space. Aside from her art, Kathleen has an (potentially unhealthy) interest in order and organization, and busies herself with (a possibly inordinate amount of) customization of personal items. She earned her MFA in sculpture from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL in 2013, and is currently working as a studio artist based in Philadelphia, PA. For everything you could possibly want to know about how her work is made, visit her Instagram: @KathleenStudebaker_Art.
