The Barn near Androssan, 2025
Oil on canvas
18 x 22 x 1"
Artist Statement
The Barn near Androssan was painted en plein air, directly from observation and completed in a single, responsive encounter with the landscape. Working outdoors allows me to engage fully with shifting light, atmosphere, and space - to translate not only what I see, but what I experience in the moment.
The quick, open brushstrokes reflect this immediacy. Rather than focusing on detailed architectural precision, I aim to capture the vitality of light moving across the field and the quiet strength of the barn within its surroundings. The looseness of the paint conveys a sense of freedom - an openness that mirrors the landscape itself.
In The Barn near Androssan, the barn becomes both anchor and witness - grounded in the earth yet animated by air and sun. Through expressive strokes and responsive color, I seek to invite the viewer into that lived moment of light, space, and freedom.
About
I'm Emma, Painting from nature is central to my practice. Whether I am working in Pennsylvania, Palm Springs, or Bavaria, I return to the same commitment: to presence. Each place carries its own character and rhythm, yet all share a dialogue between structure and light, permanence and change.
